Faith-Based Leadership
Your congregation can be a rich resource for those within the CeaseFire Chicago communities. We need your help to ensure the safety of those in high-risk environments. We also need assistance providing after-school programs and guidance for high-risk and other youth.
In 1999, more than 170 faith leaders, including Francis Cardinal George, Archbishop of Chicago, made a commitment to CeaseFire and to stopping violence by signing the Covenant for Peace in Action. The Covenant proclaims that shootings will not be tolerated and lists specific actions to take to make peace the norm. Each year since it was first adopted, additional faith leaders have joined the CeaseFire effort by signing the Covenant.
The Covenant for Peace in Action
Proclaim that we will tolerate NO MORE SHOOTING.
Declare peace the norm and make it so:
Preach for peace and against violence from our pulpits the first weekend of every month
-
Exhort our congregations to work for peace
-
Pray and speak for peace in our congregations and on the street
Assert a strong presence on the streets in response to every shooting in designated CeaseFire zones.
Counsel and support those who seek to change their lives through the provision of positive alternatives.
Adopt, mentor, and open safe havens for the youth in our communities.
Actively rally and work against guns, gun use, and gun trafficking.
Actively work with each other in the neighborhood and in this Task Force to continue the purposes and momentum of this day.
