12004 estimates represent a range of possibilities
based on best available data.
Estimate
1 (99) is based on the number of documented conflicts mediated between
January and September 2004 by CeaseFire staff
that were likely to have resulted in a shooting.
Estimate
2 represents the number of documented conflicts mediated extrapolated to
the entire year.
Estimate
3 uses official Chicago Police Department data for Jan-June, multiplies by
2 for the entire year and then compares that to the number of shootings
that occurred in the CeaseFire Zone prior to
implementation (Note: comparison years for each zone are different based on
implementation year).
2 Medical care includes
emergency room, general hospitalization, surgery, inpatient/outpatient
therapy. Medical cost of $39,000/ shooting based on "Cost of Gunshot
and Cut/Stab Wounds in the United
States, With Some Canadian
Comparisons". Accident Analysis and Prevention 1997; 29(3): 329-341. Adjusted for Inflation.
3 Criminal Justice includes judicial, legal, and
corrections costs; adapted from State of Illinois estimates; does not include
police costs. Cost per shooting is
$136,653 based on “Annual estimated costs of shootings and killings, 2001”,
Chicago Project for Violence Prevention, 2002.
4 Includes official data for 2000-2003, plus
estimate 2 from above for 2004.
